Our Diverse Heritage Events Officer and multidisciplinary artist, Phoenix Archer, worked with Ailbhe Turley, National Galleries of Scotland’s Outreach Coordinator, on the Temples of Care: Legacies project. The project explores the living legacy of the transatlantic trade in enslaved people in Scotland’s built environment and national art collection through creative responses with local communities. This work was originally inspired by the call to action and creative practice of Alberta Whittle in her 2023/2024 National Galleries Scotland exhibition, Alberta Whittle: Create Dangerously.
The team took a trip to heritage partner Historic Environment Scotland’s property, Duff House, and looked at the national art collections and created responses in the form of multisensory and anti-colonial workshops with young people. Phoenix and Ailbhe partnered with Sistema Scotland’s Big Noise Torry led by Senior Musician Kirsty Campbell, Musician Amy Anderson, and Ethical Advisor Abeer Eladany to make these workshops possible.
