FILM: Voices from Scottish Tenements

We commissioned Rob McDougall to create the short film Voices from Scottish Tenements as part of our Tenements Today | Tenements Tomorrow conference, held at Glasgow’s The Lighthouse on 18th September 2019. Voices from Scottish Tenements details the issues owners had had in having works completed to their properties, including problems related to consensus-forming, personal liability, apportionment of costs and the effects on mental and physical well-being.

In the wake of the conference, we again encourage owners to talk to their elected representatives, sharing their challenges and pointing politicians towards solutions currently being discussed, such as those of the Tenement Maintenance Working Group. Built Environment Forum Scotland has provided some helpful advice on how to approach elected representatives here.

If you’re in search of more information on tenements, Glasgow City Heritage Trust is putting on Tenements: An Architectural History, an exhibition that explores the changing history of the tenement as an architectural typology, examining its relationship with the changing lifestyles and social history of the city. Read more about the exhibition and see opening times here.

We’d like to thank our funders at the Glasgow City Heritage Trust, the Scottish Government and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors for helping us put on this engaging and relevant event.

You can view live tweets from the conference and join the discussion about tenement maintenance by checking out #tenementmaintenance on social media.

More information about the conference can be found here, and our PDF report on the conference proceedings can be found here.
