A Year of Impactful Engagement
Scottish Civic Trust’s Diverse Heritage project continues to inspire, connect and empower communities across Scotland and beyond.
From April 2024 to March 2025, the Diverse Heritage project delivered 16 in-person and 4 online events that engaged 997 people across Scotland. These events created space for diverse communities to explore and celebrate Scotland’s shared heritage, connecting individuals, strengthening identities, and challenging traditional narratives.
Reaching Communities Across Scotland and Beyond
This year concludes a successful three-year funding period (April 2022 – March 2025), during which Diverse Heritage has:
- Delivered 44 in-person and 17 online events
- Engaged over 1,700 people
- Provided inclusive heritage training to 109 individuals from over 35 organisations across the UK
- Hosted events from Wick to the Borders, while online sessions attracted participants from across the UK and internationally
The programme has worked with a wide variety of groups, from young migrants and Deaf adults to African and Caribbean elders, platforming marginalised voices to tell their stories and shape how Scottish heritage is understood.
Long-Term National Impact
Since its launch in 2018, the Diverse Heritage project has built a legacy of inclusive heritage practice. Over the past seven years, we have:
- Partnered with over 50 community groups
- Delivered 123 events and activities
- Engaged more than 2,400 participants
From storytelling workshops and heritage trails to creative exhibitions and digital events, Diverse Heritage continues to open up the heritage sector, ensuring it is relevant, representative, and rooted in community.
Building a More Inclusive Heritage Sector
At its heart, Diverse Heritage is about recognising and celebrating the many cultures, experiences, and perspectives that make up Scotland’s past and present. Through community-led storytelling and inclusive training, we are reshaping how heritage is recorded, shared, and valued.
The project remains a leading example of how inclusive heritage can inspire pride, foster connection, and make space for everyone in the story of Scotland.
